You know, I'm actually quite nice. Nice enough to throw this shit onto you AFTER Valentine's day.

Also, using TWO means of birth control enhance efficiency with 95%. Those of you who still have faith in probability may have some comfort in that fact. Me, not so much.

Let the dead rest until they are needed again. It is no use to deny it any longer. I have to put Vampires Suck on indefinite hold for now. There’s a number of reasons why, and I’ll try to sum them up fairly quickly.

One thing is the internet as a medium in itself. You’ve seen me contemplate in earlier commentaries how the need for proper updates and a fair amount of content each update makes longer storylines challenging. After my first creative breakdown, I started the Chronicles of coffee and cigarettes, adjusting focus from the setting to those who (ab)use it. These were short gags presented as strips. But I don’t want to make strips. Or gags for that matter. At least not now.

VS evolved into something I find much more interesting creating – a story. Some of you, who play any edition of WoD, realise this as well. It’s not about how shitty or badass your character is in a game mechanic balance perspective. It is the drama that inevitably will surface because everything you touch will turn to shit. Life’s still a fucking joke, but everyone doesn’t get it, and others don’t find it particularly funny.

Continuing on what has been done is troublesome. I could start making proper ‘zines altogether out of VS, but there’s simply too much backstory only available online. And then there’s my conscious decision to direct VS to those already familiar with the Masquerade-setting. A proper shift in medium would require a full re-boot, and probably to drop the universe by White Wolf altogether.

But I assure you that the vampires have not returned into the shadows forever. They are always present, and the great resource material for classical Victorian horror can be applied within a multitude of settings. But VS as it is and has been, will not be for quite a while. I am deeply indebted to you all for giving me these 4 years.

Thank you so much,
I love you.

THE PUBLICUM SPEAKS OUT

Chance is a fickle master ... random, one might say. For once in a while - and probably when you least suspect it - the improbable will occur.

Harshael2011-02-19 16:36:33

"In a mass of two hundred" That is not how probability works. All two hundred of those people could have sex a thousand times with contraception and never get pregnant without violating any "laws" of probability.

Linus2011-02-19 19:30:42

And they could ALL get knocked up having sex only once. That doesn't violate the laws of probability either. The "law" refers to the sentence in the 4th frame - "cannot be applied to you or your actions as individuals" as in "yeah, the odds are low, but so is killing a dragon at level 4. So when you grab the hanger in the closet, you might find comfort in your exceptional misfortune." It's more accurate to say that within the world's entire population that are sexually active and use birth control, roughly 0,5% will end up with an unwanted pregnancy. Picking 200 random people of the street will not be an interval large enough to warrant a definite prediction of either participants outcome, so.. yeah.. poorly phrased there. But this isn't information - this is causing alarm within the populace, a long honoured tradition of our mass mediums ;)

Tobbe2011-02-20 16:20:07

the laws of probability is a scam. something for the masses of unbelivers. we who are the followers of the Die God knows this.

Note2011-02-23 09:33:15

The probability of getting pregnant is not "per intercourse", it's "per year having sex". Or something like that.

Linus2011-02-24 07:32:44

You can have sex more than once a year?! Joke aside, you're correct. The statistics refer to a years worth of sexual activity. That might sound much better, but in reality, it's not - the alternative is just a heck-of-a-lot worse. Sure, the amount of intercourses is of course relevant to the risk of getting knocked up, but having a year at hand does not mean you have 11 months of carefree coitus and then ought to just cuddle for a month. The odds are the result of everyone's succeeding or failing contraceptives each year, independent of their personal amount of fucking. This interval is made up by the statisticians, not the fuckers themselves (that's "fucker" in a literal sense!) If you're sexually active, you usually keep on being sexually active for over a year. Your odds does not improve by having multiple partners during that timespan. You can't really avoid having a years worth of penetration by switching penises and thus claim that these are single intercourses with minimal risk of illegitimate offspring. Or that if you hook up with someone new, the odds get hairy only after 6 months. However, what has been done, does NOT affect the result of future random events. If you've been sexually active for a decade, that does not mean that your odds are worse for 2011. A rookie mistake is to calculate your contraceptives worth as (995/1000)^10 which roughly translates to 95%. And, I guess that could be quite valid for your NEXT decade, as a whole, but the odds of you NOT fucking a life into existence the LAST decade is 100% - because it already happened. Sorry folks, pre-rolling the botches out of your die is futile. It will not save you from fucking up at the most crucial of opportunities. But that gives you hope at 10-again. Another 10 is just 1/10 away, not 1/100 or 1/1000 if you've already made it twice.

Tobbe2011-02-24 14:50:17

Linus, you are wrong... it is always a 50% chance of making the roll. either you succeed or you don´t ;) All Hail the Die God...
